CO₂ is the most powerful resurfacing tool we offer — and the most demanding. Recovery is significant: 7–14 days of visible healing. The result is the most dramatic skin renewal possible without surgery. Worth the downtime when the indication is right.

Is This Right for You?

For severe skin damage
that nothing else can fix.

CO₂ Laser clients are typically adults 45 to 70 with substantial sun damage, deep static wrinkles, structural acne scars, or actinic skin damage that has accumulated over decades. They've tried gentler treatments — peels, microneedling, IPL — and seen incremental improvement. They want one big intervention that produces a generation of correction.

CO₂ delivers exactly that. The ablative mechanism literally vaporizes the damaged outer layers, forcing the skin to rebuild itself from below with new collagen and even pigmentation. The price is a real recovery period. The benefit is years of preserved, transformed skin.

The Science

How CO₂ Laser
Actually Works.

CO₂ wavelength is absorbed by water in skin tissue, vaporizing damaged layers and triggering wholesale cellular renewal.

I.

Ablative Vaporization

CO₂ wavelength (10,600nm) is absorbed by water in tissue. Energy vaporizes the damaged epidermis and superficial dermis — physically removing damaged cells.

II.

Thermal Stimulation Below

Below the ablation zone, controlled thermal stimulation triggers fibroblasts to lay down new collagen. The deeper benefit is tightening as well as renewal.

III.

Fractional Pattern (Modern Use)

Modern CO₂ is "fractional" — energy delivered in a grid pattern that leaves untreated tissue between treated zones. Faster healing than fully ablative; still dramatic results.

What to Expect

Your CO₂ Laser
Journey, Step by Step.

A multi-week journey, not a quick visit. Honest expectations and structured aftercare make the difference between great and miserable recovery.

i
Step One

Comprehensive Consultation

60-minute consult: history, sun damage assessment, skin type evaluation, realistic expectation-setting, full review of recovery timeline.

ii
Step Two

Pre-Treatment Prep

2–4 weeks of skin priming: tyrosinase inhibitors, retinoids, SPF religiously. Reduces post-procedure pigmentation risk significantly.

iii
Step Three

Treatment Day

Strong topical numbing or local anesthesia. Treatment lasts 1–2 hours. You'll be flushed, swollen, and need a ride home.

iv
Step Four

Recovery Week

Days 1–4: heavy ointment, frequent rinses, significant swelling. Days 5–7: peeling/flaking. Days 8–14: pink skin emerges, makeup possible. Months 1–6: continued collagen remodeling.

Questions, Answered

CO₂ Laser FAQ.

Common questions from our consultations. Call (973) 567-7492 with anything we haven't covered.

Is CO₂ laser worth the downtime?
For the right indication: yes — dramatically. CO₂ produces the most significant non-surgical skin renewal available. For mild concerns, gentler treatments are better. We're honest about candidacy at consultation.
How is fractional CO₂ different from fully ablative?
Fully ablative CO₂ treats 100% of the skin surface — most dramatic result, longest recovery (3–4+ weeks). Fractional CO₂ treats a grid pattern — still dramatic, faster healing (7–14 days). We use fractional for most clients.
Will I be raw or bleeding?
Yes — but managed. Days 1–3 the skin weeps fluid (lymph, not blood). Apply heavy ointment continuously to keep wounds covered. Looks alarming; heals beautifully.
How many sessions do I need?
One full treatment is often sufficient. Some clients add a second 6–12 months later to address any remaining concerns. Multiple-session protocols are more common for severe scarring.
Can I treat my body, not just my face?
Yes — CO₂ can treat the neck, chest, hands, and stretch marks. Body areas heal slower than the face; expect 2–3 weeks of recovery rather than 1–2.
Is CO₂ safe for darker skin tones?
Caution required. Risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is higher in Fitzpatrick IV–VI. Pre-treatment skin priming, conservative settings, and post-treatment lightening protocols all help. We assess candidacy carefully.
When will I see final results?
Initial result visible by 4 weeks once pink fades. Continued collagen remodeling improves results for 6 months post-treatment. Final result at 6 months from treatment day.
How long do results last?
5–10 years for the wrinkle and texture correction. New sun damage, of course, accumulates from the day of treatment forward — religious SPF protects the result.
