IPL is a different technology than laser hair removal. Lasers use a single precise wavelength; IPL uses a broad spectrum of light filtered by the device. Both have their roles. Your clinician chooses based on your specific concern.

Is This Right for You?

For the skin issues
that overlap.

IPL clients are typically women 25 to 60 dealing with overlapping concerns: sun damage, broken capillaries, occasional active acne, redness, and overall skin dullness. They want one treatment that addresses multiple concerns rather than a separate platform for each.

That's where IPL shines. The broad-spectrum light is filtered to target either pigment (sun spots, melasma), hemoglobin (redness, broken vessels), or porphyrin (acne bacteria). One device, multiple uses, layered into a series that progressively clears the canvas.

How It Works

How IPL
Actually Works.

A broad spectrum of light is filtered to specific wavelength bands and delivered through a flat treatment head. Different filters target different chromophores.

I.

Pigment-Targeting Filter

For sun damage, age spots, and general pigmentation. Light is absorbed by melanin, fragmenting pigment that the body then clears over 1–2 weeks.

II.

Hemoglobin-Targeting Filter

For redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea. Light is absorbed by blood, collapsing unwanted vessels. Improves overall skin clarity.

III.

Acne-Targeting Filter

For active inflammatory acne. Light targets porphyrins produced by acne bacteria, reducing bacterial load and inflammation.

Questions, Answered

IPL FAQ.

Common questions from our consultations. Call (973) 567-7492 with anything we haven't covered.

What's the difference between IPL and laser?
Laser uses a single precise wavelength; IPL uses a broad spectrum filtered to target specific chromophores. Lasers tend to be more effective per session for narrow indications; IPL covers more concerns in one platform with gentler per-session impact.
What can IPL treat?
Sun damage, age spots, broken capillaries, persistent redness, rosacea, mild melasma, active acne, overall skin dullness, mild skin tightening. Less effective for deep wrinkles or major textural concerns — those need different platforms.
How many sessions do I need?
Initial series is typically 3–5 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. Maintenance every 6–12 months keeps results sustained.
Is there downtime?
For pigmentation: 2–5 days of darkened spots before they flake off (the "coffee grounds" effect). For redness/acne: mild flush for 24 hours. Most clients return to work the next day — makeup is fine.
Is IPL safe for darker skin tones?
IPL is best on Fitzpatrick I–IV. For darker skin tones (V–VI), specific lasers are typically safer than IPL. We'll match the right technology to your skin type at consultation.
Can I combine IPL with other treatments?
Yes. IPL pairs well with chemical peels, microneedling (alternated by week), and Botox/filler (different days). Some clients build a multi-modality "month plan" for accelerated results.
